For those of who have just seen a silat competition for the first time. these guys are national athletes, to get speed, technique and power like that they have been practicing since they were children, you have to do hundred thousands of repetitions for every single type of kick to get such perfect technique.

I'm kind of confused by this sparring format. Maybe someone who actually knows Silat can explain this to me? I don't see any kind of head defense or effective punching here. Basically wrestling-style hand fighting/stand-up grappling combined with kicking, foot sweeps and leg trips. Whenever I see Silat technique drills or demos I do indeed see quite a bit of punching, elbowing and blocking but for some reason nobody seems to do that in this tournament. Is this a rule set issue? Because to me it looks like a surefire way to get knocked out in a real altercation.

Fun to see how once you pressure test stuff in real time what works and what doesn't.

silat is not for competition, this martial art is no joke, in term of deffence it is for permanent disabling, in offence it is for killing, silat born for combat in sumatera island n malay peninsula where a silat artist also trains every melee weapon.. so, silat is not really martial art in my region, every silat artist have uniqe and very secret deadly strike, only the silat artist n his/her guru know that very secret move, some says, if you knew the secret strike of a silat artist, you must seen death or disabled... everyone may get trained silat by a guru, but secret strike/move is not for everyone.. per tradition, secret and uniqe deadly strike for the chosen.. and for one who would go ''merantau'', the purpose is for self deffence as a last move to make ur opponent disable or dead...

Looks more like Teak Kwon Do as Silat if you ask me.

The only issue about watching these videos: you don't know who's who? what styles are in combat and who is in the red or blue? there is a lack of common sense here!

If you allow strikes to the head, put headgear on and focus more on wrestling, maybe add a ground game. Then this sport could be very devastating!

1:38 That Yoko-Geri was probably one of the best I've seen. Notice she had her weight shifted more to her rear leg. That makes it easier for her to lift up her lead leg and kick.

Interesting, the kicks come from a more hunched position. This makes it easier to shoot for a takedown.
